CYNTHIA CHATIS BIOGRAPHY

Music, art and nature are core to my work as an interdisciplinary artist—the inspiration for my work. As a Fine artist, I produce sketches, watercolors, note cards and clay forms, exhibiting at shows throughout New England. After many years, I find myself drawn toward the idea of “waste into resource” projects—creating with reclaimed or recycled materials.

A classically trained flutist, I began formal studies at age 9 (…and played anything I could get my hands on, at age 16 months.) My style continues to morph as I collaborate on local projects with many area musicians: Larry Simon Ensemble and Beat Night performances and recordings, The Front Porch on NHPR 90.1FM and Portsmouth Community Radio WSCA 106.1FM live performances, performing at Jazzmouth Festival with special guests David Amram, Eric Mingus, Don Davis and some of our finest seacoast area musicians and poets; recording with author and inspirational speaker, Laura Fournier, UNH and composer, Agnes Charlesworth; solo and ensemble performances with Knotted Chord, Voices from the Heart, Contutti, Augusta Consort, Strawbery Banke Museum events, Slow Food, First Night, Market Square Day and other community events. I also regularly play at weddings, receptions, classes, art show openings and yoga sessions.

In 2007, I released a solo album entitled “WIND”—original, meditative music, composed with flute, voice, a shruti box, tamboura, percussion and other instruments. On one track, I play the flute in such a way as to emulate the wind. Wire Magazine published a CD Review, sharing that “This is music for relaxation, spiritual contemplation or any other form of meditation…takes a cue from the late free-jazz period of John Coltrane, but in a more gentle, contemplative way.” (For this lovely review in its entirety, visit www.wirenh.com/Music/CD_reviews/Cynthia_Chatis.) Also in 2007, after completing music for 3 CDs by author, Laura Lester Fournier, we are preparing for a 4th album, slated to be recorded in early 2008.

Shakuhachi, Native and other flutes, vocals, percussion, shruti box, piano, harp--these are all instruments I enjoy exploring and playing. And in 2007, I moved to Rollinsford from Rye, New Hampshire, where I have begun to share my music passion through teaching.
